La baie de Sallenelles
Camping les Peupliers, 4 stars, is 5 kilometers from the bay of Sallenelles. For lovers of preserved natural areas, this is the ideal place to stay in Calvados. The name of the bay comes from the small village of Sallenelles which has 300 inhabitants. The bay stretches from the south of Caen to Merville-Franceville in a loop formed by the Orne at its mouth.
The Orne estuary is called a site of major ecological interest. The fauna and flora are here preserved from human pressure. The city of Caen is very close but here one enjoys landscapes conducive to relaxation and reverie. The changing colors of this vast wetland and the thousands of birds ensure a real change of scenery. Many rare species are protected. It is a vast area of 1000 hectares spread over five communes and thus makes up the estuary of the Orne. The Conservatoire du Littoral owns 300 hectares. The landscapes you will discover are made of sandbars, dunes, mud flats, salt meadows and wet meadows.
Two sites must catch your attention by their beauty, the Pointe du Siège and the Gros Banc reserve. These sites offer a major ornithological wealth. More than 400 species of birds live here. Set out on the trails to discover the migratory birds that stop there on their journey. You will see many wild ducks but also cormorants, terns, labbes, egrets, gravelots and other larids.
This tip forms a 1,200-metre long sandy strip, forcing the Orne to draw a loop before jumping into the sea.
The reserve is a space regulated by man. This natural space is the place of the most popular bay by the birds. Also, a system of valves was installed to control the entrance of seawater and its level for the preservation and comfort of species.
The house of nature and estuary of the Orne in the small village of Sallenelles welcomes you to provide you with all the useful information. The Maison de la Nature regularly organises exhibitions and activities for visitors. You will find a picnic area and even a small shop. This is how you can fully enjoy the trails and observation points that have been set up for the discovery of this magnificent natural space. Everything has been thought out for a very nice walk during your camping stay. A 5 km walking trail will make the happiness of young and old. Don’t miss the 6 m high observation tower. Your gaze will be lost until the mouth of the Orne.
